Rock O Plane

Debuting in 1947 by the Eyerly Aircraft Company, the Rock O Plane has truly stood the test of time on the carnival midway, putting smiles on people’s faces for over 60 years and accommodating 16 adults or 24 kids at a time, in eight cars.

Rock-o-Plane’s key feature is its unique rider-interaction – patrons can control their free-spinning seats with a brake, making their seat capable of upside-down action, or if not pushed, a speedy ferris wheel ride.

During transport, the ride packs down to a single trailer – the main pole folds down on a hydraulic ram with 4 arms folding each length of it, and the cars unbolted and positioned underside (or above)

There are approx 30 units in the UK and around 40 in USA. At least 2 units were built under license in Australia in the 1960’s, while in 1999, a UK engineer developed a forward-facing seat arrangement, essentially creating a whole new ride experience.

  11. We have one sitting in the weeds behind the warehouse. Hasn’t operated since the nineties.

    Chuck - October 31st, 2011 at 4:12 pm

  12. Outstanding wheel. Its a shame more shows (big and small) don’t carry one of these. It has great thrills, its easy to set up/tear down, and you can pull it as double with another load. Shows need to think about putting more wheels back on their midways (not just a few giant wheels) to give people choice (and make the midway look stronger).

  14. Two locations in Sydney that had Rock O Planes were Luna Park and Manly Fun Pier. Manly Fun Pier closed down sometime in the 70’s and the one at Luna Park was eventually removed.

  19. I have rode this since the early 70s. A true classic. Try working the brake so that you are upside down at the bottom and then adjust it so that you climb still upside down. maximum pressure!

  20. Hello all,
We have a Rock-O-Plane here in Oregon. It is in Portland Oregon, at Oaks Amusement Park. I really enjoyed the ride, and it came to me as a surprise that I did not know about the brake, which is like a bar with a ring in the centre of it. I rode on it two times before I learned about it on my third ride.

  26. I’m putting together a small museum of individual seats, cages, cars, etc from amusement park rides and carnival rides. If anyone knows of an individual Rock-O-Plane cage (not the whole structure, just one cage/seat), please contact me. I don’t resell. This isn’t a buy and sell business. I also want a Skydiver car, Flying Cage, Rock-O-Plane Cage, several others. I am in Youngstown, Ohio and Northern Virginia. Jim (330) 774-4107

  35. Yee-ha! Rock-O-Plane! The Rock-O-Plane would make a GREAT replacement for the Zipper! Best yet, according to an answered question on Yahoo Answers, you can still ride single on the Rock-O-Plane.

  39. If you rock your car at the bottom and lock it while your feet are up and you’re on your back, then keep it locked as you ride to the top, you’ll be upside down. Just as you are about to start the down side (but your car is still at the top and you’re upside down) release the lock and your car will spin 360 head over heels all the way down. This is one ride that can be mild or WILD if you know how to work it!

    Sandy - August 9th, 2016 at 11:00 am

  40. First ride I ever rode that went upside down. Two people that know how to work it can get it to spin several times. Hated it when the operator locked the brake so tight I couldn’t release it BORING! Has to be freewheeling 4 the most fun!
Where’s the nearest 2 northnern IL?

    Fred Hoffman - June 2nd, 2017 at 4:05 am

  41. The rock o plane was the undisputed champion of all the rides at the traveling carnival when I was a kid. You lined up, rode it, and lined up again until your tickets were gone. We all called it the “egg roll.” I am so happy to know its real name and would love to ride it again someday!

    Hannah - June 4th, 2017 at 2:32 pm

  42. I absolutely loved this ride, a classic at every fair just like the merry go round. I not only rode it many times but I also had the privilege to run one for Otterbacher Amusements back in the 70’s and early 80’s. Nothing better than working for a traveling carnival and running all those rides such as the Scat, Scrambler, Round-Up etc. Great times. BTW the Rock was a money shaker, picked up lots of change every night after we closed.
